Tips for creating a pallet garden
Planting in Pallets are different than planting in pots; when starting a pallet garden for your deck you have to do a few things differently. To ensure that your pallet garden is a success there are a few key tips to prepping and finding the right materials.
1). Some pallets are sometimes full of chemicals. Be sure to clean them.
2). Look for a “HT” stamp which mean they were heat-treated.
3). Check your pallet for nails and splinters before you work with it.
4). If you paint your pallet seal it with a waterproof sealant.
5). You will need a staple gun and garden cloth.
6). Staple garden cloth on the back and sides of the pallet to contain your soil.
7). Planting in vertical pallets.
If you love growing but have limited space, pallets are perfect planters since they can also go vertical, which creates a beautiful focal point for deck gardens. With pallets your given the option to use every gap or remove a slat or two to create a variance in spacing.
When you are adding potting soil, be sure to get under the slats. This is because, if you are creating a vertical garden the soil will slide. If decide you want to plant seeds, you may want to wait about a month before you stand up your vertical garden, this gives them time to sprout. Vertical pallet planters also make for a perfect herb garden. You can even get creative and add labels so you know what each herb is.
Using Raised pallet planters
Pallets are also great for creating raised gardens. One of the best things about a pallet garden is the flexibility. They remain contained and are moved fairly easily, yet they give you more room than most pots. It is also a great option for those with dogs. You don’t have to worry about digging.
With pallets you can stack them to the desired height. You can take them apart and make them narrower, great for running along the edges of your deck. They also look great when paired with a bench between them.
