Restore Deck Finish from Mildew Infestation
During the summer, heat and high humidity are common in many parts of the country. These are optimal conditions for mildew growth on an unprotected PVC deck. While PVC is much better at preventing Mildew than wood, it is still not impervious. Mildew is a type of mold that decomposes boards for food and reproduction. Mildew can take a while to get established, but once it does, it rapidly spreads. Moist exposed boards is all it requires to get the food and moisture that it needs for growth.
PVC decks can only resist moisture when it’s protected by a coat of sealant. How can you tell if your deck still has a protective coat? Sprinkle some water on its surface. If the water beads, then you still have sealant. If the drops are absorbed, then the surface is bare wood and should be resealed before mildew can take hold.
If you haven’t kept up with your deck maintenance and you have a mildew problem, it’s time to remove the mildew with this restore deck finish procedure:
1.) On a sunny day when the weather is warm and the air is dry, clear off the deck furniture and other loose items. Sweep away dirt and replace nails or screws that stick above the surface.
2.) Scrub the deck with a wash solution of water and DeckMAX cleaner. Give your back a break by using a deck brush with a long handle so you can do the work standing up. Make sure to cover every square inch of the deck because it’s the DeckMAX cleaner solution that kills the mildew.
3.) Use a hose and nozzle to rinse the deck with water and allow the surface to completely dry. Use your hands to feel the surface for any hint of moisture.
4.) Now it’s time to apply the sealant with either a paint brush or a roller. Allow at least a full day for the sealant to dry before walking on it.
When the job is complete, relax and enjoy your newly restored deck. From this point on, mildew is easily prevented by restoring and resealing your deck every two years. If you would like more information about deck restoration, feel free to contact us.
