Non Toxic Home Cleaners That Are Safe for the Environment
When people think of environmental pollution, images of factories and power plants belching out black smoke come to mind. Compared to these, using a few home cleaners with toxic chemicals barely make a dent, right? They do, when enough people use them. It’s the power of numbers at work. As of 2009, the United States had over 117 million households. The toxic chemicals from these millions of households end up back in the environment after going down the drain or into our yards.
Thanks to marketing, people are convinced that nothing short of these toxic products will keep their homes clean. However, long before these products existed, people somehow managed. How did they do it? By using common and non toxic home products that are safe for the environment.
Baking Soda
Most people know about baking soda for its ability to eliminate refrigerator odors. It’s also a highly effective cleaner that cuts through grease and oils. In addition to cleaning, it deodorizes, scours, and softens water.
White Vinegar
White vinegar cuts through grease, removes wax buildup, and odors. It is effective at removing mildew and kills 82% of mold species. Mixing it with baking soda broadens the mold species that you can kill.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is another natural mold and mildew killer. It also cuts through grease and leaves a shine on hard surfaces. Its acidity makes it effective in killing many types of household bacteria. It’s also a stain remover. For tough stains, leave it on the stain for 10 minutes before wiping. When combined with baking soda in an open dish, you get an effective household odor absorber and deodorizer.
Soap
Ordinary soap (without petroleum distillates) is a highly effective hand washer. Although this isn’t a surprise, it’s worthwhile to note that plain old soap is just as effective as antimicrobial soap. Rather than killing the bacteria, ordinary soap simply lifts it off your hands and sends it down the drain. Antimicrobial soap causes the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
White bar soap works well for pre-treating laundry stains and for hand washing garments.
