Deck Inspections
Deck parties are fun throughout the summer and fall. However, homeowners should conduct inspections to verify gatherings are safe. Inspections will help identify signs of trouble early so they can be addressed. Typically inspections should be conducted in the spring and again near the end of summer. Rain and humidity during the summer may cause issues that weren’t apparent in the spring. Inspections should be done on every deck: wood, PVC, or composite; newly built, recently refurbished and older decks. Consider the following tips when preparing to inspect your deck.
Look for Rot: Do a visual inspection to identify any wood that is rotting. Places that look suspect may feel spongy or break without splinters. In addition, check for holes which may indicate insects are causing damage. And don’t limit the inspection to the top of the deck, check below the surface and along the edges. Replace any rotting wood as soon as possible.
Safety Features: Railings should be firm so they can support someone as needed. Often people lean against railings when enjoying a deck party. To verify railings are not loose, grab a hold and shake. If the railing doesn’t hold firm, secure it.
Also check each individual step to make sure it is in good condition. Verify the steps are not loose and the railings for the stairs are firm.
Support: It is important that the support posts are firmly connected. If loose connections are identified, tighten or replace the bolts. In addition check the ledger board which connects the deck to the house. If the gap between the ledger board and house has widened tighten the bolts. Also, clear any debris such as leaves or mud that is located between the house and deck.
Surface: The surface of the deck should be thoroughly inspected. A buildup of mold and mildew can cause the deck to be slippery, especially when wet. Consider a thorough and professional cleaning. Mold and mildew are not limited to just wood decks, composite and PVC decks can also feel the effects of humidity.
“Considering the many issues with wood decks, DeckMAX recommends investing in a PVC deck. It eliminates the splintering, rot, and many other frustrations many homeowners face with wooden decks,” Pat Byrne, President, DeckMAX.

Final notes: If major issues are identified during the deck inspection it is best to refrain from using the deck until the issues have been resolved.
Remember: Fun deck parties are those that are safe.
