As spring starts, flowers are starting to bloom all around us. When you look at your deck, is it full of blooming flowers, or is it just bare? If your deck is currently bare, consider these simple DIY deck projects.
Selecting the right planters and flowers will transform your deck.
Planters
There are many choices when it comes to planters. It is best to choose planters that complement both your deck and your home. Wooden planters can be bought or stained in a variety of colors. Rectangular shaped wooden planters can sit on the railing or be attached to the front side of the railings. Some people even choose to place rectangular shaped wooden planters directly on your deck.
Terracotta pots are also popular deck planters. They come in a large variety of sizes. They can be as small as a few inches in diameter or over a foot in diameter. Terracotta pots allow a homeowner to experiment with different sized planters and with different visual arrangements.
Random different items can be turned into planters. Old watering cans, old tin cans and containers make colorful planters. More usually items such as old rain boots, Crocs, kettles, and pansmake unique planter choices.
Our favorite is the Gutter Garden. Re-using old gutters, simply paint or use as is. It’s so cost effective, eco-friendly, and can take any kind of plant.

Flowers
When your deck is bare, adding color can spruce it up quickly. Petunias are a popular spring annual. They are easy to find at your local grocery or department store. Petunias come in a wide variety of colors and sizes and allow gardeners many creative choices. You can find petunias in various shades of purple, pink, fushia, yellow, and orange, to name a few colors. And they grow well in small containers.
Impatiens are another popular type of spring flower. They need morning sun and afternoon shade. Impatiens come in solid colors and the flowers are generally 3 inches wide. Trailing impatiens can hang down the side of planters that are set on or attached to rails.
Zinna are a very visable spring flower. They grow taller than both petunias and impatiens, generally 12 to 14 inches tall. They are great flowers to layer behind lower growing petunias and impatiens. These flowers come in red, pink, white, yellow and orange.
