Restore a Deck: Three Pointers That Make the Job Easier
It can be a struggle to keep the floors inside your house in tip-top shape. However, doing the same for your deck can be an even greater challenge. In addition to getting foot traffic like the indoor floors do, your deck also takes a good beating from mother nature. Rain, wind, humidity, mold, sunlight, UV rays, snow, and sleet are just a few of the things that a deck must endure every year. So it is quite understandable why you might need to restore your deck from time to time. Here are three pointers on making your deck look great while also making the job easier on yourself.
Take Preventative Measures
A few preventative measures will reduce the amount of work required when you get around to restoring your deck. Grease is difficult to remove and it is easiest if you don’t have to clean these stains in the first place by using a grease catcher. The same principle applies to grime and dirt. Regularly take a broom to your deck to prevent grime and dirt buildup.
Planters that sit in one spot for long periods will cause moisture problems on the deck surface below it. The chronic exposure to moisture under planters causes the wood to absorb the moisture and leads to mildew problems. This is prevented by moving small planters around on a regular basis and using planter feet on the larger ones. This gives the deck surface a chance to dry out. Another option is to use hanging planters.
Take Advantage Of Power Washers
Without a doubt, power washers really come in handy when cleaning a deck. It allows you to apply force to the surface without having to put your back into it. In terms of the fatigue factor, this is important especially if your deck is large. However, care must be taken not to damage your deck by applying too much water pressure and using improper technique. Always keep the nozzle moving with a sweeping motion to avoid exposing any spot to the water pressure for too long.
Take Advantage Of DeckMAX Cleaner
If there are heavily soiled areas, apply some DeckMAX cleaner to avoid using excessive force, either from your back or from over-applying the power washer to the area. How can you tell when to use this “secret weapon”? When the dirt is not coming out with normal power washing. Never resort to increasing the water pressure beyond what’s recommended for your deck. Instead, pull out DeckMAX cleaner- It will get the job done.
